NSCAATV.com College Soccer Special: Army v Navy (men)
On Friday, Nov. 8 at 7 p.m. ET the second ever Army-Navy Cup will be played out at PPL Park in Philadelphia and is airing live on the College Soccer Special. After the inaugural Army-Navy Cup last season producing nine cautions and two overtime periods, the second cup is sure to be a thriller once again.
Coming into the 80th edition of the Army-Navy rivalry game, the squads are neck and neck in Patriot League play as Navy and Army are sitting in first and second place in the conference standings and have clinched the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds of the postseason tournament.
Head coach Dave Brandt, in his fifth season at Navy, is 3-0-1 all-time against Army. The Midshipmen have secured their first Patriot League Regular Season Title since 1991, playing perfect through conference coming into this match.
Navy (12-3-2, 8-0) is currently on an 11 game winning streak, and this is in large part due to the play of sophomore forward Jamie Dubyoski, junior defenseman Joseph Greenspan, and senior midfielder Martin Sanchez. The play of these three Midshipmen has produced a combined 41 points with Dubyoski leading the way with 21 of those points on nine goals and three assists.
Senior goalkeeper, Gavin Snyder ranks second in the country with a .36 goals-against average on a .911 save percentage. The senior has been stellar for Navy with an unblemished record of 11-0 between the pipes this year with five shutouts in conference play.
Army has also seen much success this year. Through their first six conference competitions, the Black Knights matched the Midshipmen game for game and found themselves tied for first place in conference at 6-0-0. In their last two contests however, Army has wavered. First falling 2-1 to Holy Cross, then drawing even with Lafayette 0-0, the Black Knights now enter the Army-Navy Cup at 6-1-1 in conference and 12-2-2 overall.
Junior goalkeeper Winston Boldt leads one of the best defenses in the nation. Army leads the country in shut out percentage (0.75) and save percentage (.904), while ranking second in goals against average (0.48). Boldt ranks top five in the NCAA in both save percentage (.900) and goals-against average (.476).
Last time out, in the inaugural Army-Navy Cup the teams tied 1-1. Navy scored in the 53rd minute on a goal by Nick Dubee, but Army was given a penalty kick in the 88th minute to draw even for the eventual tie. The game was played in front of 3,672 fans at PPL Park which is the home of the Philadelphia Union.
The Army-Navy Cup II will be broadcast live on the College Soccer Special on Friday, Nov. 6 at 7 p.m. ET. Be sure to tune into this rivalry match as it will not disappoint.
